Local hoops teams in action over Christmas breakFri, 12/28/2007 - 11:18am

School was out for the holiday season, but many local basketball teams were in action over Christmas break. The Starr’s Mill Panthers (3-7, 3-4 region) lost on the road, 61-53 to Henry County Saturday. They were scheduled to play in the Woodland Henry-Henry County Christmas Tournament yesterday. The Lady Panthers (2-6, 1-6) are on the road all this week, participating in the South Central Bank Lady Invitational of the South. They were scheduled to play Thursday, and they are set to play tonight, tomorrow and Sunday. Both the McIntosh boys (4-4, 2-4) and girls (5-3, 3-3) squads have off until Jan. 4, when The Northgate boys (3-8, 1-5), led by Brannan Hopkins’ 23 points, opened the tournament with a 54-40 victory over Ola., and the East Coweta boys (3-9, 0-4) pummeled Pike County 76-46 in the opening round, as well. Northgate’s other high scorers in its victory were Wesley Buchanan (13 points), Derrick Brisbane (eight) and Marquez Mobley (seven). East Coweta’s high scorer against Pike County was Casey Rosser (11 points). The Northgate and East Coweta boys then squared off in the tournament championship game, and East Coweta came away victorious, 64-56. It was East Coweta’s third straight victory. Hopkins led all scorers with 23 points. Justin Linville had 10 points, Jamon Amey seven and Wesley Buchananan six for the Vikings. Rosser and Justin Taylor led East Coweta in scoring with 12 points apiece, Khambrel Hugley-Brown had 11 and Brandon Farmer had seven. The East Coweta girls narrowly defeated Pike County 51-45, while the Northgate girls hammered Ola 41-26 in the first round. LaBrittany Stokes scored nine points to lead East Coweta. Kristin Ellerbee and Carmen Fife each added six points for the Lady Indians. Natalie Pluskota and Brianna Banks both scored 16 points in Northgate’s victory. Northgate and East Coweta advanced to the tournament championship game, in which Northgate got the best of East Coweta, defeating the Lady Indians 48-34. Pluskota led all scorers with 22 points, and Banks had 12 for the Lady Vikings (6-6, 2-4). Meghan Downes and Areli Aguirre both scored 10 points to lead the Lady Indians. login to post comments |
