The summer of annexation in 2006 is far from over. One of the companies that could not make the cut in time last year was welcomed into Fairburn Dec. 10 when the council voted unanimously to annex Nestle Purina Petcare on Fayetteville Road.

In its application for annexation, Purina indicated the company provides nearly 300 jobs and, through payroll and taxes, adds $22 million annually to the local economy. The company said it expects no changes to the physical environment or use of utilities as a result of the annexation. The site is zoned M-1 Light Industrial.

“We feel like this is a good thing for us and the city,” said Purina representative Matthew DePoia. “I think we’ll be an asset to Fairburn.”

Purina last year paid $189,000 in county and school board property taxes, DePoia said.

Purina wanted to annex into the city in 2006 but did not get their application in on time, said city administrator Jim Williams, so they had to wait until after the September vote on the proposed city of South Fulton.

Situated on a 35.22-acre site adjacent to the city limits, Purina currently used some of the warehouses across the street which where already located in Fairburn, said city development manager Gail Denman. Purina felt it makes more sense to have all their facilities within one jurisdiction, she said.
