Rising Starr Middle School has been named a Georgia School of Excellence by State School Superintendent Kathy Cox.

The school was one of 23 schools across the state receiving the honor, which was announced today.

Rising Starr was selected because it is in the top 10 percent of schools in reading and math tests.

State officials also honored 12 of the schools because they demonstrated the greatest continuous gains in student achievement for the past three years in reading and math tests.

"These schools are the best of the best," said State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox. "The teachers, students, parents and staff at these 23 schools are focused and determined and they are getting the job done. Congratulations to everyone who works for and supports our Georgia Schools of Excellence."
