The McIntosh wrestling team kicked-off the 2007-08 season by sweeping all three opponents in a Quad meet at McIntosh on Tuesday night. In the opening match the Chiefs beat Troup 59 to 18 and then handily took care of Riverdale with a 60 to 24 win. In the night cap McIntosh beat a tough Lovejoy squad 48 to 29.

Afterwards Coach Nick Bellantoni said “Overall I am happy with our results tonight. I was real happy with taking the matches we did against Troup and Lovejoy. It was our first competition of the year and it showed. We had a few wrestlers compete really well but we also had way too much inconsistency. We have a lot of work to do in the wrestling room tomorrow.”

The Chiefs were led by seven wrestlers winning all three of their matches; Team Captains Richard Hughes at 130lbs, Carl Scheumann 152lbs and Matt Carroll 215lbs won all 3 of their matches. Senior Jarrod Chamblee at 112lbs and Sophomores Ricky Oskey at 145lbs and Sean Carney at 275 also finished the night with 3 wins and no losses. Other undefeated wrestlers on the night included Erik Willanzheimer at 189lbs, Jessy Toscano at 140lbs Cory Brandt at 171 and Jacob Worthington at 189lbs.

Rickey Oskey wrestled perhaps the most exciting match of the night against his Troup High School opponent. The two wrestlers were tied late in the third period when Oskey threw his opponent to his back and won in a sudden and decisive pin.

Coach Bellantoni went on to say “Tonight was a good start to the season. This competition allowed us to work out some early season jitters as we prepare to compete this weekend in the Tony Carlucci Tournament in New York. This weekend is going to be tough.”

Sophomore Trent Shallow finished the night with 2 wins and 1 loss as did Sophomore Matthew Perry wrestling who was competing in his first Varsity competition. Freshman Clayton Prudeaux at 125lbs finished the night with 1 win and 2 losses as did Jim Murrell at 135lbs. Also competing for the Chiefs were Gabby Perez 171 lbs and Colin Brandt at 160.

In the McIntosh JV Squad dropped a tough match to Lovejoy 30 to 42. Winning their matches for the Chiefs were Josh McClendon, Justin Durden, Alex Scheumann, Jake Fountain and Cory Brandt. Others wrestlers competing for the McIntosh JV Squad were Javy Perez, Chris Cable, CJ Stephens, Sam Murrell, Garret Richard and Kyle Baughman.

The Chiefs Varsity Squad travels to New York this weekend for a Tournament while the JV Squad will be in a weekend competition at Alexander High School.
