The sudden and tragic death of our state representative, Dan Lakly, has left a somber note to the beginning of this holiday season. For those of us who knew Dan as a loving husband, father, grandfather and dedicated public servant, his easy smile and ready humor will be missed. Our prayers and sympathies are with the Lakly family during this difficult time.

However, we must move on. Our district needs quality representation in the state legislature. Therefore, I am announcing my candidacy for the 72nd House seat in the special election on Dec. 18.

I moved to Georgia in 1995 in search of new opportunities and settled in Fayette County over 10 years ago. My family and I have participated in the wonderful sports and recreation programs offered in this special place to live. The quality of the education my children have received in this county must be preserved for future generations.

I am active in the civic and business sectors of our community, currently serving as the president-elect of my local Kiwanis Club and as chairman of the Atlanta Air Cargo Association.

The problems facing our state and community are many. The strains on our education system and the increasing cost of health care are crucial concerns that must be tackled in a thoughtful and reasonable manner. The protection of our natural resources, an abundant supply of clean water and the right to breathe air free of toxins are matters of immense importance.

Issues as fundamental as how we are taxed and who will determine where and to whom these monies flow will be decided in the next legislative session. I am very willing and capable of working in a bipartisan effort to solve the contentious issues we face.

The reckless growth and “wild West” style development in our state and county must be tempered with an intelligent approach to progress. We must follow a plan that considers our ecology as well as our economy and one that provides for the quality of life that brought us to Fayette County in the first place.
