January • Starr’s Mill’s varsity wrestlers won the county duals ahead of Fayette County and placed third in their Invitational tournament, while the Tigers placed fourth in their annual Christmas tournament. • McIntosh soccer player Jesse Lenze was named NSCAA High School State Player of the Year and was also an NSCAA High School All American and a NSCAA High School Scholar All American, along with teammates Arlen Whittle and Katie Schulz. Schulz was a Parade All-American and was invited to the ODP National Camp in Carson City, Calif. along with Lenze and Kelley O’Hara (Starr’s Mill). O’Hara is a member of the U-17 National Team and Lenze advanced to the Region III team from the Region III pool. O’Hara was also been named an NSCAA Youth All-American. February • Sandy Creek’s boys and girls, Fayette County’s boys and girls and Starr’s Mill’s girls all made the state basketball tournaments in their respective classifications. Sandy Creek and Fayette County’s girls won their region tournaments and Sandy Creek’s boys and girls made the sweet sixteen of the AAAA state tournament. • Lauren Cartwright of Starr’s Mill was a state champ in the 200 individual medley at the AAAAA state swim meet. • Drake McCoy finished as a state champion in the 275 pound weight class of the AAAAA stet tournament. Starr’s Mill’s Stephen Savage (125) and Patrick Kellerman (160) placed third, while Jeff Partlow (189) placed fifth. Fayette County’s Donte Douglas (130) placed fourth and Matt Dyer (215) placed sixth. McIntosh’s Richard Hughes (103) placed fourth in the AAAA state tournament. March • Sandy Creek’s boys played in the AAAA final four against Tucker and lost in overtime. • Starr’s Mill and McIntosh’s varsity girls soccer teams tied 3-3 in their only meeting of the season. The McIntosh boys defeated Starr’s Mill 2-0. April • David Owens hit a three run walk-off home-run for Fayette County’s varsity baseball team in a 14-12 win over Newnan. • Lance Armstrong and the Tour de Georgia came to Fayette County. The stage started by the old courthouse square in Fayetteville and racers passed through Peachtree City and Tyrone on their way to Coweta and South Fulton counties. • Starr’s Mill and McIntosh’s boys and girls won region titles in varsity soccer, while Fayette County and Whitewater’s boys and girls and Sandy Creek’s boys soccer teams earned trips to the state tournament. May • Our Lady of Mercy’s golf team won the region 5-A championship after completing an undefeated season. • Starr’s Mill’s varsity baseball team won the region 4-AAAAA championship and Fayette County’s team made the AAAAA state tournament as well. Landmark Christian’s boys won the region 5-A title. All three teams made the sweet sixteen in their respective classifications. • Our Lady of Mercy’s boys track team won the region 5-A title, while Landmark’s girls won the region 5-A title and the Class A state title. • The McIntosh Lady Chiefs soccer team won the AAAA state championship, while the McIntosh boys team finished as runners-up. June • Father Vic Galier, pastor of St. Matthew’s in Tyrone raced against Coach Mark Waxmonsky of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School, who was filling in for Mercy Chaplain Father Paul Burke, at Senoia Speedway’s “Faster Pastor” race and won. • The Flat Rock Middle School Lady Eagles topped off a perfect 10-0 season by winning the Fayette County Region Volleyball Tournament • The 12u Georgia Seminoles from Peachtree City went 8-0 to win the 2005 Smoltz/Grissom Wood Bat Classic. July • Austin Enriquez, a junior at Starr's Mill High School and a member of the SouthSide Pioneers Track & Field Club (Fayetteville) was ranked number one in the nation for 1,500M Intermediate Boys and number two in the nation for 3,000M Intermediate Boys divisions. • Six athletes from Oh Do Kwan Martial Arts went to the AAU National Tae Kwon Do Championships in Greensboro, NC August • David Mathis took the silver medal in the Youth Boys 200M (24.5) and the bronze in the 400M (54.7) at the 2005 State Games of America (SGA) Track & Field Championship meet. The Whitewater High School junior varsity softball team won the Sandy Creek Fast Pitch tournament at McCurry Park by going undefeated on Aug. 19 and 20 • The 88 AFC Lightning Gold boys U-19 soccer club was crowned Champion at the 2005 Atlanta Cup held over the Labor Day weekend • McIntosh’s Emily Borsare won the Carrollton Cross Country Invitational with a time of 17:45.50. The Lady Chiefs also won the Boling Park Invitational and Borsare placed first with a time of 17:44.60 October • Starr’s Mill’s varsity softball team won the region 4-AAAAA championship, while rivals Fayette County also earned a trip to the state playoffs. Whitewater made the AAAA playoffs and Our Lady of Mercy made the A playoffs. Only Starr’s Mill survived into the next round. • Starr’s Mill won the region 4-AAAAA volleyball title over Fayette County. Both made the state tournament, as did McIntosh in AAAA. • McIntosh’s girls cross country team won the county championship with Borsare winning the race with a time of 17:46. The Our Lady of Mercy boys cross country team won the county title and Starr’s Mill’s Austin Enriquez placed first with a time of 16:36. November • In cross country, the Fayette County boys, the Starr’s Mill girls, the McIntosh girls and the Landmark Christian boys and girls won their region championships. Individual region champs were Borsare (McIntosh), Ginny Balckom and Enriquez (Starr’s Mill) Jake Lethbridge (OLM) and Elizabeth Gresham (Landmark). • Starr’s Mill’s Lady Panther softball team ends their season in the Elite Eight of the state softball tournament. • The McIntosh volleyball team was one match away from making the state championship game. • The McIntosh girls cross country team won the AAAA state championship, while the Landmark Christian School girls won their third straight Class A state title. Our Lady of Mercy’s Jake Lethbridge was a state champion in Class A. • Starr’s Mill’s varsity football team made the quarterfinals of the AAAAA playoffs and lost to Brookwood at home. Whitewater’s varsity boys basketball team and the McIntosh lady Chiefs varsity basketball team won the Our Lady of Mercy Thanksgiving tournament. Whitewater’s Jay Bright and McIntosh’s Elyse Chubb were named tournament MVPs. Fayette County’s varsity boys basketball team won the Arrowhead Classic in Morrow over Thanksgiving and Chris Pettaway was named the tournament MVP. December • The McIntosh swim team opened the 2005-2006 season with two consecutive meet championships. • Whitewater swimmer David Menchinger won the 200 yard freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke in the Carrollton BlueFin Invitational. • Starr’s Mill’s varsity wrestling team placed fourth at the South Metro tournament. McIntosh’s Richard Hughes (103) placed first and was voted Best Finals match, while Whitewater’s Jordan Strain (140) also placed first. login to post comments |
