• Hortman completes basic training

PFC Kyle Hortman recently completed basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot located on Parris Island, South Carolina. He successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Hortman and his fellow recruits began their training each day at 5 a.m. by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Hortman spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments, which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat, and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Hortman also received instructions on the Marine Corps' core values - honor, courage and commitment - and what the words mean in guiding personal and professional conduct. Hormtman and fellow recruits ended the training phase with the Crucible, a 54-hour team effort and problem solving evolution. After graduation from Parris Island, Hortman will be stationed at Camp Geiger, North Carolina, for 8 weeks of combat training, after which he will receive orders for his permanent duty station. Hortman is a 2007 graduate of Fayette County High School, Fayetteville, and is the son of Judy Hortman of Fayetteville and Chris and Michelle Hortman of Stockbridge.

• Salkar named Ty Cobb scholarship recipient

Amit Salkar of Peachtree City is a new recipient of a scholarship provided by the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation. A doctor of medicine major at Mercer University, Salkar is listed among 208 Georgia residents who received $505,000 in scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year. The Foundation was established in 1953 by the late Tyrus R. Cobb (1886-1991), a native of the northeast Georgia city of Royston, who was unparalleled as a baseball star for most of his 24-year career in the major leagues. Owner of a .367 lifetime batting average and the first player elected to baseball's Hall of Fame, Cobb established the scholarship foundation to assist capable and deserving residents of Georgia who need assistance in completing their college education.

• Kellerman completes training encampment

Patrick E. Kellerman has completed a U.S. Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) field training encampment at Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City, S.D. The four-or six-week summer training camp is designed to motivate, educate, and evaluate the cadets' leadership potential to be Air Force officers, and to determine their potential for entry into the ROTC Professional Officer Course (POC). Normally, cadets between their sophomore and junior year of college attend the encampment. The training gives students their first exposure to a working Air Force environment and an opportunity to learn and apply officer leadership theory, techniques, and responsibilities. Encampment training includes leadership evaluation exercises, officer specialty orientation, survival techniques, confidence course, physical fitness, aircraft and aircrew orientation, small arms handling, human relations orientation and equal opportunity education, and study of the organization and functions of an Air Force base. Upon graduating from the attending college or university and successfully completing the ROTC program requirements, the cadet is commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. Kellerman is a currently attending Auburn University, Ala. He is the son of Ken R. and Terri L. Kellerman of Fayetteville, Ga. The cadet is a 2005 graduate of Starr's Mill High School, Fayetteville.
