Landmark tops ELCA, 35-30Mon, 11/05/2007 - 11:29am
By: Michael Boylan
Last Friday the Landmark War Eagles went on the road and defeated the Eagles Landing Christian Academy Chargers in an important region game by the score of 35-30. It was a close contest that went down to the wire. Things did not start off well for Landmark as they turned the ball over on their first four possessions. Luckily the defense was up to the task early only allowing a field goal after the turnovers. Once the War Eagles offense settled down, it became the Walter Lenard show. The senior running back kept the War Eagles in the game during the first half as he accounted for over 150 rushing yards before the break including scoring one touchdown and setting up another score for sophomore Austin Broussard to give the War Eagles a 14-9 halftime lead. After halftime Lenard broke tackle after tackle and seemed to be a man on a mission running behind an offensive line and blockers who dominated the Chargers defense. During the second half Lenard broke out for a 90 yard touchdown run and 49 yard touchdown run on his way to a record setting performance of 31 carries for 390 yards and four touchdowns. The War Eagle defense made the big plays when they needed it in the second half. Senior linebacker Charlie Long tallied eight total tackles including three big tackles for losses. Junior safety Blake Wyatt and senior linebacker Luke Griffith both seemed to be around the ball all night as Wyatt finished with 17 total tackles while Griffith finished with 20 total tackles on the night. With the Chargers driving late to take the lead Griffith and Wyatt solidified their great performances as Griffith stripped the ball from an ELCA receiver and Wyatt recovered the fumble to allow the War Eagle offense to pick up a first down and run out the clock. The War Eagles play their final regular season game this Friday night at home against the Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats for senior night. login to post comments |
