South Fulton election 07 previewMon, 11/05/2007 - 9:56am
By: Ben Nelms
The time for south Fulton residents to make their decisions on who will represent them for the next four years is almost here. And with a total of 40 people qualifying in the four cities, the field of candidates for the Nov. 6 election will include perhaps the largest list of candidates in memorable history. In Palmetto, voters will decide on their choice for mayor and three council seats. The mayor’s race will see incumbent Clark Boddie squaring off against former councilman John Miller. In the race for three at-large council seats councilman Leon Sumlin is running for re-election and is joined in the race by Hunter Gillam, Scott Cannon, Lorraine Allen and Natalie Beavers-McFadden. Due to the at-large method of council elections, the top three vote-getters will be declared the winners. Voting in Palmetto will be held at city hall, located at 509 Toombs Street. In Union City, seven candidates will be on the ballot for two city council seats. The top two vote-getters will be sworn-in in January. Candidates include incumbents Alisa King and Helen Turner and challengers Sandra Brittian, Retina Dawson, Brian Jones, Vince Williams and Ricky Ryles. Dawson confirmed Tuesday that, though she is on the ballot, she will not be seeking election and has thrown her support to Turner and King. Voting locations in Union City include Gullatt Elementary School located at 6110 Dodson Drive, the Etris Building located at 5285 Lakeside Drive and Sparks Auditorium at Christian City located at 7290 Lester Road. In Chattahoochee Hill Country, the first-time election boasts a field of three candidates for mayor and 16 candidates for the five district city council seats. Unlike at-large races, Chatt Hills does elect city council members for each district. Mayoral candidates include Don Hayes, Rocky Reeves and Tom Reed. Council District 1 candidates include Ruby Foster and John Taylor. District 2 candidates include Doris Boylen, Carl J. Hattaway, Mark Prater, L.J. “Mickey” Tierney and Julie Petty Wall. Chatt Hills District 3 candidates include Anacleto “Cleto” Montelongo, David Hanson, Alton Powell and Laurie Searle. District 4 candidates include Faye Peek Godwin and Wayne Stradling. And District 5 candidates include Ernie Henderson, Rodney Peek and Hugh Tyer. The Chattahoochee Hill Country voting location is Rico Cultural Center, located at 6505 Rico Road. And in Fairburn, three at-large city council seats will be up for grabs. The seven candidates include incumbents, Ron Alderman, Frankie Arnold and Marian Johnson along with Jeff Couch, Geral Todd, Elizabeth Hurst and Bryan Paden. As in the other at-large races in south Fulton, the top three vote-getters will win the election. The voting location in Fairburn is city hall, located at 56 Malone Street. login to post comments |
