A south Fulton couple was found dead in their home off Cedar Grove Road Thursday night after Fulton County Police and SWAT officers had surrounded the Parkland Bend home in a multi-hour standoff.

Dead at the scene were Clayton Mattis, 35, and victim Subeth Edwards, 36, according to Fulton County Police Maj. Wenda Phifer.

The murder-suicide appeared to be a domestic situation, Phifer said. Police received a call from Edwards’ sister, saying that she had not heard from the victim since Tuesday night and was concerned, Phifer said.

Fulton Police arrived at the residence to conduct a welfare check on Edwards and got a response from Mattis, who answered but would not open the door, said Phifer. SWAT members and a hostage negotiator were called to the scene.

Nothing more was heard from inside the house. Once officers received the go-ahead to enter the home they found Edwards and Mattis dead, Phifer said.

The exact cause of death has not been released from the Medical Examiner’s office, though Phifer said Edwards had been shot and that Mattis had been shot twice and had apparently muffled the gunshots with a pillow.

Edwards and Mattis worked together at a local beauty supply store that he owned. Phifer said that prior to shooting himself Mattis had called the store and was told by an employee that she needed an unspecified amount of money. Mattis told the woman to take the money out of the cash register, Phifer said.
