Palmetto council members took the advice of city engineers earlier this month and awarded a Fairburn company the contract for the Thurmond Street drainage improvement project.

Weickum Construction Company was the low bidder for the project. Though not a large project, Weickum’s low bid of $23,583 was significantly lower than those submitted by the $29,541 bid by Steadman Grading, Inc. of Palmetto and one by Lawrenceville’s GS Construction of $29,700. City engineers Keck & Wood recommended that Weickum be awarded the bid.

The project calls for the installation of nearly 200 feet of four-inch concrete drainage channel, concrete driveway reconstruction, rip-rap stabilization and erosion and sediment control.

Keck & Wood Vice President Dennis Benz said in a Nov. 18 letter that low bidder Weickum had completed similar projects and was considered qualified to complete the project.
