There is nothing like home sweet home for the Starr’s Mill Panthers. Starr’s Mill continued its dominance at home Friday, defeating Region 2-AAAA rival Woodward Academy 28-12 to remain undefeated at Panther Stadium in Fayetteville. All four of Starr’s Mill’s victories have come at home this season. And the victory over Woodward was Starr’s Mill’s fourth following a loss. “I guess it’s a comfort zone for a young team,” said Starr’s Mill coach Mike Earwood, referring to his team’s propensity for winning at Panther Stadium. “I guess it also means we’re not a very good road team.” The Panthers (4-4, 3-3 in the region) scored one touchdown in every quarter, and each was scored on the ground. Starr’s Mill’s running game punished Woodward’s defense, finishing with 216 rushing yards on 38 carries. Spencer Penson (nine carries, 61 yards) scored on a 23-yard run in the first quarter and a 7-yard run in the second quarter to hand the Panthers a 14-0 lead at halftime. Miles Jaye added to Starr’s Mill’s lead with a 13-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Woodward finally broke the shutout on Juwan Thompson’s 8-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Parker duPont’s 45-yard touchdown run less than a minute later completed the scoring for Starr’s Mill. duPont led all rushers with 90 yards on eight carries. Starr’s Mill’s defense forced three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble) and held Woodward to 42 yards rushing. login to post comments |
