Wildcats rout Alpharetta, Chiefs defeat Woodward in OT

Last Friday saw some more mixed results for the local football teams. Whitewater and McIntosh picked up wins, while Fayette County, Sandy Creek and Our Lady of Mercy were handed region losses and Landmark Christian and Starr’s Mill each had bye weeks.

Whitewater faced Alpharetta and won big, 45-7. The Wildcats got 165 yards rushing from Tavoris Dixon and 97 yards and a touchdown from Kurdice Neal. Quarterback Jay Bright threw for 103 yards and two touchdowns, one to Cody Haralson and one to Jonathan Bringuel. Bringuel had an interception in the game, as did Kevin Fleming and Ryan Johnson, who had two. Other touchdowns were scored by Jonathan Ashley, who scrambled for 33 yards for a score, and Justin Evans who recorverd a fumble in the end zone. Brice Thomas led an outstading night for the defensive unit with 10 tackles.

With two games remaining, Whitewater is closing in on an undefeated season. They are 8-0 and will travel to take on Mill Creek on Friday. Coach Amos McCreary staes that Mill Creek is a better team than their record would indicate and that the Wildcats must not overlook them.

McIntosh got a major monkey off their back on Friday with an overtime win over Woodward Academy. In recent years, McIntosh has not been lucky in overtimes and this time luck was on their side with the Chiefs picking up a win. They stopped Woodward on their opening drive of the overtime period and then had Nick Popeil convert a third down into a touchdown. Drew Webb had a good night at quarterback for the Chiefs, leading scoring drives to close out the half and regulation. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for one more. The defense didn’t play as well as they had in recent weeks but they played good enough to get the win.

The Chiefs will host Haralson County on Friday.

Sandy Creek head coach Chip Walker knew that his team would have their hands full dealing with Haralson County last Friday and the Patriots came up short against the Rebels. Sandy Creek lost 22-21 and now has two region losses. The offense was balanced once again with Corbin Miles and Kody Green scoring touchdowns and Jake Turing connecting with a number of receivers. On defense, the unit also played well. A region championship is out of the question and hosting a home playoff game is also unlikely as both Creekside and Douglas County are above them in the region standings. The Patriots must focus on the games ahead of them though instead of wondering about their postseason fate.

Last week Mundy’s Mill handed Starr’s Mill a loss and this week they continued their assault on teams from Fayette County with a 23-14 win over Fayette County.

The Tigers got touchdowns from Channing Welch and Kevin Finn and had several drives led by quarterback Jeremiah Enloe that came up short due to turnovers. Whiel the defense played well and stopped Mundy’s Mill on a number of occasions, they came up short one too many times . Mundy’s Mill was once again led by Errol Wynn.

Fayette County has a bye this week.

Our Lady of Mercy took on Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy and lost 21-0. The Bobcats have a bye this week and will play at Mt. Zion, Carroll in the final week of the season. A win would likely give them entrance to the Class A state playoffs.

Starr’s Mill and Landmark Christian, both of whom had byes last week, will be back in action this Friday. Starr’s Mill will host Newnan and Landmark Christian will host Whitfield Academy.
