Starr's Mill and Sandy Creek win area volleyball titlesTue, 10/23/2007 - 3:03pm

Starr’s Mill’s volleyball team captured another area title over the weekend and will once again enter the state tournament as a no. 1 seed. The Lady Panthers went undefeated in the tournament, defeating Creekside (25-10, 25-10), Northgate (25-22, 25-13) and McIntosh (25-18, 25-21) and (16-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23). Starr’s Mill opens the state tournament on Saturday with a game against Tucker at Woodward Academy at 9 a.m. The winner will meet the winner of Lakeside, Evans and Dalton. McIntosh placed second in the region. Their wins came against Banneker (25-4, 25-5) and Whitewater (25-20, 25-22) and (25-13, 25-16). McIntosh will open the tournament against North Springs at Lithia Springs at 3 p.m. The winner will meet the winner of Sequoyah and Mt. Zion, Jonesboro. Whitewater placed third. Its tournament wins came against Fayette County (25-10, 25-12) and (25-2, 25-9) and Northgate (25-17, 23-25, 25-18). They will open the state tournament with a game against St. Pius at Lithia Springs at 10:30 a.m. The winner will meet the winner of Jonesboro and Cherokee. The Area 3-AAAA All-Area Team and MVP were recently announced and local teams were well represented. Whitewater’s Casey Howett and Brittany Woods made the team, as did McIntosh’s Kendall Wilde, Elyse Chubb, Leigh Moyer and Morgann Mitchell. Starr’s Mill’s Alexis Shaffer and Chrissy Culp also made the team, while Mary Chadoin was named Area MVP and Coach Dottie Licciardi was named Area Coach of the Year. Sandy Creek won the Area 6-AAA championship. The Lady Patriots defeated Villa Rica (25-8, 25-6), and Cartersville (25-12, 25-11) and (25-22, 25-14, 25-15). Sandy Creek will open the AAA state tournament with a game against Harlem on Saturday at Westminster at 10:30 a.m. The winner of the game will take on the winner of Flowery Branch and Hardaway. Landmark Christian school placed second in Area 3-AA/A. They will open the state tournament with a game against Temple at Savannah Christian at 9 a.m. The winner will face the winner of Holy Innocents and Buford. login to post comments |
