OLM comeback stuns Mt. Pisgah

Our Lady of Mercy trailed Mt. Pisgah for 45 minutes and 55 seconds but took a 63-62 lead with 2:05 left in the game.

The game opened with Mt. Pisgah running a 99 yard kickoff return for a touchdown and the extra point. Christian Willis of Mercy answered with a 35 yard run for an apparent touchdown but it was called back due to a clipping penalty.

After an interception returned for a touchdown by Mt. Pisgah, quarterback William Pearl answered for Mercy with a 45 yard touchdown run.

Mercy surprised Mt. Pisgah with an onside kick and recovered it but fumbled on third down and Mt. Pisgah took over and scored on a 55 yard touchdown pass at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter to make the score Mt. Pisgah 21 Mercy 7.

The Bobcats were unable to move the ball and Mt. Pisgah to take a 28-7 lead after another long run.

Our Lady of Mercy answered with a 68 yard Pearl to Jarrell Bankhead pass to cut the Mt. Pisgah lead to 28-14. The score held for the quarter. Usually this is enough scoring for a game, but he fans were about to be treated to much more.

The second quarter started with Willis scampering for a 46 yard. Mercy touchdown to cut the Mt. Pisgah lead to 28-21.

On Mt. Pisgah’s next possession, they scored on a touchdown pass at the 7:55 mark to take a 35-21 lead and scored again at the 5:05 mark to take a 42-21 lead. Things looked bleak for Mercy but Willis scored on a 23 yard run to make the score 42-28. Mt. Pisgah was not done as they scored on a 60 yard play with 1:30 left in the half.

Pearl answered with a pass to Dominique McDermott for a touchdown at the 30-second mark of the second quarter to give the fans a half of football that they will never forget.

The half time score was Mt. Pisgah 49 Our Lady of Mercy 35 and the scoring was still not done.

The Bobcats opened the second half by throwing an interception. Mt. Pisgah answered with a touchdown to take a 56-35 lead. With Willis injured on the Mercy sideline, McDermott answered the call with a nine yard touchdown to bring Mercy closer The quarter ended with Mercy trailing Mt. Pisgah 56-42.

Mercy held Mt. Pisgah to start the fourth quarter and Joseph Gagliano ran for a 39 yard touchdown to cut the lead 56-49. The Mt. Pisgah crowd was getting a little anxious to see Mercy within seven points.

The Bobcats held Mt. Pisgah again and McDermott ran 44 yards for a touchdown to tie the game 56-56.

Both teams stalled on their next possessions. A Mt. Pisgah running back burned Mercy for the last time on a 75 yard touchdown run to give them the lead. After a procedure penalty, the extra point was missed.

With 5:14 left in the game, Mercy felt good. Pearl drove Mercy down the field and scored. Jacob Lescene was automatic with the extra point, yet again, and Mercy took its first lead.

Mt. Pisgah moved the ball but turned it over on downs and Mercy took a knee to run out the clock.

Mercy is now 4-3 and 1-1 in the region.
