Sandy Creek stuns Carrollton 28-14Mon, 10/22/2007 - 11:33am

Braxton Lane is one of the most dynamic playmakers in the state. He can dominate a game with the ball in his hands, which he did Friday, catching eight passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns in Sandy Creek’s stunning 28-14 victory over No. 3-ranked Carrollton. "Braxton was just what you expect a playmaker to be," Creek coach Chip Walker said. "He made some spectacular catches and played with real fire." The victory moved Creek (4-3, 3-1) into a first place tie with Carrollton and Cedartown in Region 6-AAA. Lane put Creek ahead 7-0 in the first quarter, hauling in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Rio Johnson. Carrollton tied the game late in the quarter on Luke Walker’s 1-yard touchdown run. The game remained tied until the second quarter, when Johnson hit Matt Solomon with a 3-yard touchdown pass that capped a 17-ply, 80-yard drive. Solomon was active on both sides of the ball, finishing with a team-high 11 tackles, including one for loss, and one sack. Johnson (13 of 19, 262 yards) continued to be efficient in the second half, completing all four passes he threw for 119 yards and one touchdown. He was one of the primary reasons Creek held an edge in total yards of offense, 330 to 254. Johnson went back to his favorite target in the third quarter, hitting Lane with a 60-yard touchdown pass. Lane caught Johnson’s pass and weaved his way through Carrollton’s defense on the way to the end zone. Alex Green’s 1-yard touchdown run put Creek ahead 28-7 in the fourth quarter. Labrian Hudson scored on a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late for the shocked Trojans. Creek had only 68 yards rushing, but it ran the ball 38 times, keeping Carrollton's explosive offense off the field, and each of its scoring drives were all over 65 yards. It's early, but Creek has its eyes on the prize — the region championship. "We control our own fate now," Walker said. "If we win out, we're region champs." login to post comments |
