Cameras counted pedestrians, carts

Several weeks ago you may have noticed video cameras posted on Peachtree Parkway at the intersections of Crosstown Road and Walt Banks Road.

They weren’t there as a crime prevention tool. Rather they were used to capture pedestrian and golf cart traffic data, as the city studies what intersection improvements should be made in either area.

At the parkway and Walt Banks, last year the city’s traffic consultant recommended a roundabout, but council scrapped that idea and sent Qk4 back to the drawing board. Now a four-way stop, there’s a possibility that the intersection may have enough traffic to qualify for a stop light.

On the south end, meanwhile, the city is also studying the parkway at Crosstown Road, which is also a four-way stop albeit a more complex one because of the numerous lanes involved for the four-lane road section, including turn lanes in both directions northbound and southbound.

Both intersections have pending construction projects that could impact traffic in the area. On the other end of Walt Banks developers are close to breaking ground on a retail/office loft complex in addition to a Comfort Inn and Suites. And right at the intersection of Crosstown and the Parkway is a senior apartment complex that’s already underway, although the management company hopes many of its residents will take advantage of its shuttle service.

The City Council has expressed concern about the pedestrian crossing across the parkway on Walt Banks. Earlier this year at council’s request the police department began putting a crossing guard during school commuting times, as there are many golf carts being driven to McIntosh High School.
