Harlow accepted into academy’s regiment

Midshipman Daniel P. Harlow, the son of Russell and Mary S. Harlow of Fayetteville, Ga., participated on Sept. 15 in acceptance day ceremonies at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

The colorful annual event marks the official acceptance of the freshman class into the ranks of the academy’s regiment of midshipmen.

A graduate of Whitewater High School, Harlow, with some 280 other plebes, was administered the academy oath by Rear Admiral Joseph D. Stewart, the institution’s superintendent. The members of the class of 2011 were additionally sworn into the U.S. Naval Reserve by Rear Admiral Noel G. Preston, USN, the Deputy Chief of the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Harlow was nominated to attend the academy by Congressman Lynn A. Westmoreland.

The plebe class reported to the academy on July 5 for a two-week indoctrination program. Since then, the they have been involved in academic and regimental education and training.

The academy is operated by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
