The Fayette County Board of Education is hiring a consultant to investigate the possible sale of 40 acres of land behind Whitewater High School.

The consultant, Integrated Science and Engineering of Fayetteville, will report back to the board on the feasibility of making the stream and lake on the site available for use as mitigation credits, while having the remainder of the property sold for use as a single-family subdivision.

The study will also investigate the cost of creating a new stormwater detention pond so that task can be taken off of the lake that’s currently on the property, said Ron Feldner of ISE.

If the property is ultimately sold for use as stream mitigation, Feldner said the school board could draw up conditions that would allow the area to be accessed by the school for educational purposes.

Feldner said Georgia Power might be interested in the property for stream mitigation, as might the Georgia Department of Transportation.

While ISE will work to determine the value of the property for the stream mitigation use, the BOE will need to use another land appraiser to determine the value of the land for the potential subdivision.
