Area tournaments start this week, teams aim for state

The area volleyball tournaments have already begun and a number of local teams are hoping to propel their way to the state tournament with their play this week.

Our Lady of Mercy (14-19, 4-5 region) took on Paideia and Landmark Christian (22-18, 6-1 region) faced Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy yesterday after the paper went to press. The Area 3-AA/A tournament will continue tomorrow at Lovett High School and the finals will take place on Saturday.

Sandy Creek (36-12, 6-0 region) opens play in the 6-AAA region tournament in Cartersville tomorrow with games beginning at 5 p.m. The tournament concludes in Cartersville on Saturday with games starting at 9 a.m.

McIntosh (33-8, 7-1 region) will host the opening rounds of the Area 3-AAAA volleyball tournament tomorrow. Fayette County will take on Whitewater (31-12, 6-2 region) and McIntosh will face Banneker at 5 p.m. Starr’s Mill (41-3, 8-0 region) will play at 7 p.m Thursday and will host the final day of the tournament on Saturday.

In the most recent poll on GaSports.com, McIntosh is ranked first in Class AAAA, with Starr’s Mill in second and Whitewater in seventh. Sandy Creek is ranked third in Class AAA and Landmark Christian is ranked sixth in Class AA/A.
