Merry Christmas — no, wait, happy holidays — no, wait, ah, whateverTue, 12/20/2005 - 5:49pm
By: Letters to the ...
What is happening to us as a people? We are sniping and name-calling over what we call a holiday and trying to one-up each other as to how much more “Christian” we are because we call Christmas Christmas. Someone announces our mayor was voted out of office because he didn’t use the word Christmas tree and therefore tried to take Christ out of Christmas. Actually I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would want to be mayor in this city and subject himself or herself to the scathing attacks we have seen recently. But that is another whole story and I digress. We are a pathetic bunch. Those of us who claim to be Christians should perhaps spend our energies actually acting like Christians. Look around at the need in our own country, or our own county for that matter, not to mention the rest of the world. Can you honestly imagine they are worrying about what to call a tree in Louisiana or Mississippi right about now? Our actions can speak a thousand times more loudly than our words. You want to put Christ in Christmas? Say hello to a stranger, contribute to Toys for Tots, help out the myriad of relief agencies who need our help. Better yet, encourage your children to celebrate the presence as well as the presents. I can tell you that will quickly get your mind off what you should be calling a tree. That said, my heartfelt thanks goes out to Mr. Paul Farr whose recent letter has been one of the only sane responses to this entire exercise I have seen recently. By the way, since we won’t have Mayor Brown to kick around much longer and it is too early to start picking on Mayor-elect Logsdon, feel free to take a verbal swipe at my opinion; and Merry Christmas to all.
