Thomas Frierson scored three touchdowns to lead the Whitewater Wildcats to their second consecutive victory, 31-8 Friday over the Westlake Lions in Atlanta.

"I hope that going to Westlake and coming away with a win gives us some more confidence," Whitewater coach Amos McCreary said. "Beating a very good Westlake team was big for us."

By the end of the first half, Whitewater had a 17-0 lead. Thomas Frierson had 2- and 4-yard touchdowns runs, and J.C. Jennings kicked a 27-yard field goal.

One of Frierson's touchdown runs was set up by a blocked punt by Chris Asbury. Kevin Fleming returned the punt 27 yards.

Frierson scored again in the third quarter, returning a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.

Chase Penland’s 30-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter completed the scoring for Whitewater (3-2, 2-1).

The Wildcats’ rushing attack wore down Westlake’s defense; Whitewater had 225 yards rushing, and was led by fullback Collin Wooddy, who ran 21 times for 113 yards.

Having right tackle Sam Ernst, who missed the first two games of the season with a herniated disc in his neck, back has boosted Whitewater's running game.

"Early on, our linemen were making mistakes," McCreary said. "They're starting to figure it all out. Having Ernst back at right tackle has really helped our line."

Whitewater’s defense came close to shutting out Westlake, but the Lions scored on a 5-yard run with 3 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to avoid a scoreless night.
