Good grappling by local teams

A number of local teams participated in wrestling tournaments over the weekend, preparing for what will be a busy holiday break.

Whitewater wrestlers grappled in the Stockbridge Tiger Classic and placed 13th overall. Only Jordan Strain (140) placed in the top six in his weight class for the Wildcats. He finished first and was vited the Most Valuable Wrestler.

Sandy Creek placed second in the Landmark Christian School Christmas Invitational and had three tournament champions among their eight tournament placers.

Tournament champions were Drew Gunnin (140), Alex Willis-Cruz (145) and Derek Scarbrough (215), while Frank Brand (152), Travis Cooper (171) and Jesse Deyo (275) placed second and Julian Holmes (135) and Samson Horne (189) placed third.

Our Lady of Mercy’s lone placer in the tournament was Thomas Raville (119), who placed third.

McIntosh’s wrestlers competed in the Pebblebrook Duals and went 3-2 on the day. The Chiefs defeated Osborne, 63-18, Alexander, 50-27 and North Springs, 59-12 but lost to Lovett 46-27 and Pebblebrook 41-36. Matt Penn (145) and Richard Hughes (112) both went 5-0, while Alan Sarvis (119), Matt Bozone (130), Scott Ritter (171), Matt Carroll (189), Jarrod Chamblee (103) and Landis Ford (152) went 4-1. Sarvis, Bozone, Ritter and Carroll each had three pins on the day.

Fayette County faced Ridgeland, Gordon Lee and Chatooga on Saturday and won all three matches.

Whitewater and Sandy Creek will wrestle in the Fayette Christmas Classic at Fayette County High School on Wednesday and Thursday Dec. 28 and 29.

McIntosh will wrestle in the Dacula Duals tomorrow at 9 a.m. and will wrestle in the Etowah “Eagle Challenge” Duals on Friday, Dec. 30 at 9 a.m.
