Virginia Weldon McElroy

Virginia Weldon McElroy, 92, Fayetteville, died Sept. 20, 2007. She was born Sept. 10, 1915 in Woolsey, Fayette County, and was delivered by her father, a country doctor. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. John B. and Ethel Hodnett Weldon, her husband of 53 years, whom she married in 1940, Clark Howell McElroy Sr., a daughter, Eleanor Hodnett McElroy Jackson, and grandsons, Christopher Weldon Windham, and Clark Howell McElroy III. She was a stay-at-home mother to four children, living in the same house for over 60 years. She was the first Girl Scout Troup leader in Fayette County, and a faithful member of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. She was loved so dearly that a grandson and three great-granddaughters bear her name. She was always interested in the world around her and was a member of The Study Club in Atlanta, traveling to Europe, Hawaii, and throughout the United States. She read her newspaper daily and worked the crossword puzzle and Jumble. She was famous for her caramel cakes and homemade biscuits. Services were at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Westmoreland officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Cemetery, Fayetteville. Survivors include a son, Howell and Pat McElroy; daughters, Janet and Jerry Windham, Susie and Glen Davis; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church Building Fund. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.
