Local players going ‘bowl’-ing

• Andy Smith, a 6’4, 290 pound offensive guard for the University of Memphis and graduate of Starr’s Mill, will play in the Motor City Bowl against Akron on Dec. 26 at 4 p.m.

• Andrew Gardner, a 6’6”, 285 pound tackle for Georgia Tech and a Sandy Creek graduate, started at left tackle for Tech in every game this season.

Reuben Houston, a 6’, 190 pound cornerback for Georgia Tech and graduate of Starr’s Mill High School, played in two games for Georgia tech this year and finished with one tackle, one assist and one pass break-up.

Calvin Johnson, a 6’4”, 230 pound wide receiver for Georgia Tech and a Sandy Creek graduate, had 52 catches for 869 yards and six touchdowns in the 11 games he started in. Johnson was named to the first team All-ACC team this year and was also a first team All-American.

Tech will play the University of Utah in the Emerald Bowl on Dec. 29 at 4:30 p.m.

• Deante Battle, a 5’10, 180 pound cornerback for the Northwestern Wildcats and a Starr’s Mill graduate, played in 10 games this season and had 27 solo tackles, 19 assists, one interception and three pass break-ups.

Northwestern will take on UCLA in the Sun Bowl on Friday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m.

• John Deraney, a kicker for North Carolina State and a Fayette County graduate, led the Wolfpack in scoring with 71 points. he connected on 15 of 18 field goal attempts and connected on all 26 extra point attempts. His longest field goal was 48 yards. He also had 65 punts for a total of 2,605 yards with his longest punt going for 57 yards and he had 51 kickoffs for a total of 3,257 yards. Twenty five of his kickoffs were touchbacks.

NC State will take on the University of South Florida at the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m.

• Chris Capps, a 6’6”, 286 pound left tackle for the University of Alabama and a Landmark Christian School graduate, started every game this year for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama will meet Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl on Monday, Jan. 2 at 11 a.m.

• Kedric Golston, a 6’4”, 292 pound defensive tackle for the University of Georgia and a Sandy Creek graduate, had nine solo tackles, five assists, one and a half tackles for a loss of eight yards, half a sack for five yards and 25 quarterback hurries this season.

The Bulldogs will face the University of West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl on Monday, Jan. 2 at 8:30 p.m.

• Darrell Burston, a 6’2”, 250 pound defensive end at Florida State University and a Starr’s Mill graduate, had four solo tackles, nine assists, four and a half tackles for loss of 11 yards, one sack for four yards, two pass break ups and six quarterback hurries for the Seminoles this year.

Florida State will meet Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 8 p.m.
