The Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) has announced that the Fayette County Public School System is one of the top 10 school systems in Georgia for participation in its talent searches.

Duke TIP offers gifted students an opportunity to take tests at least two grade levels above their level to determine where they stand in relation to their gifted peers and what level of educational challenge is appropriate.

“The challenge of meeting the needs of all students is a daunting responsibility and it is impressive that one of the commitments Fayette County Schools has made is to serving gifted students,” says Joy Baldwin, director of identification and support services for Duke TIP.

Duke TIP offers two talent searches: one for students in 4th and 5th grades and another for students in 7th grade. The 4th/5th grade talent search gives students the opportunity to take the EXPLORE test for 8th graders, while 7th graders get to experience the ACT or SAT college entrance exam.

Taking the SAT or ACT in 7th grade gives students a chance to practice and become familiar with the exams that play a major role in college admissions. Students’ early experience with the college entrance exam is helpful in preparing them to take it in high school.

All talent search participants receive resources and publications to assist the student’s educational growth.

“We understand the efforts that are being made throughout the district by personnel in the central office and at each school to create the outstanding talent search participation numbers in Fayette County Schools. We extend our gratitude to all of them,” says Baldwin.

A certificate of appreciation from Duke TIP will be presented to the school system at the Fayette County Board of Education meeting on October 15.
