Brain Balance is giving parents hope for their child

Parents of children with signs of ADHD, Autism/Asperger's, Dyslexia, Tourette's or other neurobehavioral disorders spend years trying various treatments to improve their child's functioning, but often reach a point where they are told by doctors, “There's not much more we can do for your child.”

Brain Balance disagrees with this. Dr. Pete Scire, Executive Director of Brain Balance Atlanta says, “Experience has taught us that virtually every child, no matter what challenges he or she may face, has the potential to improve. We are in the midst of an epidemic in the United States of kids with neurobehavioral disorders. Brain Balance provides hope and dramatic improvements in just a few short months.”

Brain Balance has an achievement center on Hwy. 74 North in Peachtree City.

Peachtree City parent, Jamie Decesare's experience with Brain Balance is just one of many examples that support this.
“Our child was a typical Autistic child before Brain Balance. We spent five years doing every possible thing out there to help her. Brain Balanced helped her faster than all the things we did in five years. She is now doing all the things we never thought she'd be able to do. She is a joy to be around. The guilt as a parent is gone.”

My son has lost his symptoms of Autism, ADD/ADHD, Tourette's, and his Autoimmune Neurological Disorder”, says Natalie Stubbs, another Peachtree City parent. “Prior to coming to Brain Balance, we tried occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, nutritional therapy, social skills training, behavior modification and the protocols of Defeat Autism Now! Since starting with Brain Balance, my son has had profound improvements in his social, academic and physical abilities. No more tantrums, meltdowns, outbursts or aggression. Our family life is like a normal, typical family.”

Dr. Robert Melillo, founder of the Brain Balance program, describes what makes Brain Balance so different than other programs,
“The problem with most existing programs is that they work on strengthening the stronger hemisphere of the brain at the expense of the weaker side. As a result, the hemispheres continue to become more imbalanced resulting in Functional Disconnection Syndrome.”

Many of the symptoms associated with various neurobehavioral disorders of childhood are the result of Functional Disconnection Syndrome. This syndrome refers to the condition where the two halves of the brain - the right and left hemispheres - are not communicating with each other normally. The normal development and flow of communication across the brain is disrupted.
In addition, typically one half of the brain is significantly slower than the other, so it can not compare and share information accurately with the other half of the brain. The stronger side of the brain must take over and starts to ignore or not connect with the weaker side of the brain.

Dr. Scire explains, “When we are primarily only using one side of our brain, our interpretation and reactions to the world will be off and our behavior will be abnormal. This reduced connection between the two sides of the brain produces disconnected children. They are disconnected from their own bodies and from their senses. They are also socially and emotionally disconnected. The goal of the Brain Balance Achievement Program is to correct the communication breakdown between the two hemispheres of the brain. It is this fundamental brain imbalance that results in the range of negative symptoms and behaviors exhibited by children.”

The Brain Balance program is the only program designed to assess, document and objectively quantify Functional Disconnection Syndrome through the use of extensive testing in all areas of function, followed by individualized programs to improve functions. Brain Balance utilizes their proprietary model to first assess a child's functioning in 1200 parameters that fall within three areas: 1) sensorimotor, 2) neuro-academic and 3) bio-nutritional. They then meet with the parents and provide them with an easy to follow, comprehensive report that not only explains which functions of the brain are weak and strong, but also rates that functioning on five achievement levels and reports which hemisphere of the brain needs to be stimulated in order to raise that functioning.

Brain Balance works to “puts kids back in sync” with an integrated program that does not rely on drugs, medical procedures or psychotherapy.
“Since balance is the essence of our program, we also ensure that each child progresses in a symmetrical way,” Dr. Scire says. “That is why each achievement level is further segmented into right and left hemispheres. This is where our program delivers an incredible level of individuality. No two children are identical and no two Brain Balance programs are identical.

Parents tell us that after reading reports from so many different doctors, teachers and other specialists, the Brain Balance report finally put all the pieces together for them in a way that made sense and illuminated the true source of their child's problem. Parents are able to clearly see and understand the areas of brain imbalance and the opportunities for functional improvements.”

Special Education Teacher Mandy Gunter was so impressed by the progress that one of her students made in the Brain Balance program that she left her job with Fayette County Public Schools to work at Brain Balance. She had a student in her class who was having on average five outbursts a day in the classroom. His behavior quickly became more controlled when he participated in the Brain Balance program.

“I have seen more progress with this student in just a few weeks of his attendance at Brain Balance than in the three years I worked with him in the school system. In the school system, I always targeted goals that I knew I could accomplish, which were all, coincidentally, left brain goals, but these goals ignored critical elements of life”, Mandy said. “When we began stimulating the right side of his brain, we began to see rapid improvements.”

Brain Balance will open a center in Suwanee this fall in support of their mission to make the Brain Balance program available to as many children as possible, so that each child may reach their greatest physical, mental, social and academic potential.
