Winging it!

You may know how you like your wings (spicy, mild, barbeque), but did you ever wonder where the original Buffalo wing came from?

As the story goes, chicken wings first originated in Buffalo, N.Y. One Friday night in 1964, at the Anchor Bar and Grill, chicken wings were deep fried and then flavored with a secret sauce. The Buffalo chicken wings were an instant hit, and a new American favorite was born.

That American favorite has now come to Tyrone, where Wings N Things is serving up wings and a host of other delicious menu items. These local wings are just as good as the original, as attested by a visiting customer.

“Mr. Chives is from Buffalo, New York, and lives two miles from the Anchor Bar and Grill, the restaurant that found the Buffalo wing,” Wings N Things owner Keith Taylor explained. “He says that the Tyrone Wings N Things wings are every bit as good as his hometown’s wings.”

That is a compliment the Tyrone restaurant can be proud of. Wings N Things wings come in eight different flavors, including mild to scorcher, lemon pepper, teriyaki, and owner Taylor’s favorite, barbeque. Prices range from $5.95 for eight wings to $49.50 for 100 wings, and are served with veggies, fries or Texas toast. The Family Special is a bargain at $29.50, and includes 50 wings, a basket of fries, a basket of onion rings and four drinks.

While it might be the wings that make Wings N Things well-known and give the restaurant its name, there are enough menu items to satisfy anyone: salads, wraps, burgers, sandwiches, chicken fingers, appetizers. Daily lunch specials offer discounts on some of the most popular menu items.

A favorite menu item of Taylor’s are the onion rings, which are hand cut and battered daily. Customer favorites include the hamburgers, which are also made fresh daily. As always at Wings N Things, the burgers come in a variety of ways, including Mushroom Swiss, Cheesy Cheese, topped with three different kinds of cheese, or Hickory, which comes served up with cheddar cheese, bacon and barbeque sauce. The regular burger starts at $4.85 and specialty burgers are up to $6.95, including a choice of side.

If you are feeling the need for something healthy, try a salad or wrap. The Screamin’ Chicken Finger Salad is a tasty choice for those daring enough. Taylor says the wraps are also a customer favorite, and come stuffed with barbecue chicken, chicken Caesar, or veggies, with a choice of side item. Sides range from fries or coleslaw to pasta salad or veggies.

Wings N Things in Tyrone is the first franchise off the original Wings N Things restaurant in Fayetteville.

“In 2003, my wife Lisa and I met with Scott Haygood, owner of the original Wings N Things to ask about starting a franchise,” Taylor explained. “After much consideration and discussion about the perfect location, Wings N things landed in the beautiful town of Tyrone.”

The menu and the commitment to quality ingredients and menu items have carried over to this new location, as have the entertainment nights. Team Trivia happens every Tuesday at 7 p.m., Family Night is every Wednesday, complete with magic man Jeff Hicks to entertain the kids, and Thursdays are host to Texas Holdem poker at 7 p.m.

Wings N Things offers offsite and onsite catering. Taylor suggests renting the patio or dining area for birthday parties or end-of-season sports parties, or ordering a party tray for your next get-together.

Being a franchise of the well-known and popular Wings N Things in Fayetteville, Keith Taylor knows his Tyrone location has a lot to live up to, but he is confident his restaurant will live up to the challenge.

“Wings N Things in Tyrone is the first franchise, and we wanted to set the bar higher for future Wings N Things restaurants,” he said. “We believe that Wings N Things has set the standard with this new location.”

Wings N Things is located at 1158 Senoia Road in Tyrone. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday noon to 10:30 p.m. For more information, call 770-892-3320 or visit www.homeofthescorchers.com.
