Whitewater cruises in weekend softball tournament

The Whitewater Lady Wildcats softball team played in the North Cobb Warrior Classic over the weekend and went 5-0, winning the Gold/Orange Bracket and improving their overall record to 15-3-1.

To reach the gold bracket, the team beat Southeast Whitfield 3-0, Rome 9-1 and Murray County 18-0. In the gold bracket, Whitewater defeated Northside, Warner Robins 2-0. The runs were driven in by Jamie Saunders and Nikki Montesanti.

The final game with Dalton went to the international tie-breaker rule and Whitewater won in the eighth inning, 4-2. Runs were scored by Kaitlin Johnson, Tess Echols and Lauren Williamon. Echols hit an RBI double in the eighth to win the game.

It was a dominating weekend for the Lady Wildcats. Pitcher Whitney Toler pitched 23 innings, struck out 29 batters, gave up 15 hits and allowed only one earned run. Alysa Glaze pitched four innings and struck out seven batters.

Williamon batted .600 for the tournament with five RBIs and three doubles. McKenzie Woody batted .438, hit six singles, stole six bases and drove in a run. Jamie Saunders and Haley Richards both drove in five runs, and Ashley Schwab added three RBIs and four stole bases.
Whitewater is ranked third in Class AAAA in the most recent poll from GaSports.com and the Georgia Athletic Coaches Asssociation. They faced the fourth-ranked team, Northgate, Tuesday after the paper went to press, and will make up their game with McIntosh at McIntosh tonight at 5 p.m.

Starr’s Mill, ranked fifth in the poll, hosted Woodward Tuesday and will host Woodstock today. They will play at Grayson on Friday.

Sandy Creek, ranked sixth in Class AAA, played at Cartersville Tuesday and will play at Parkview today before hosting Haralson County tomorrow at 5:45 p.m.

Fayette County will host a doubleheader with Lovejoy on Thursday at 4:30 and 6 p.m.
