Soccer fields in the worksMon, 12/19/2005 - 9:53am

Members of the Tyrone Town Council, the Tyrone Recreation Department and the Tyrone Youth Soccer Association gathered at Handley Park last Saturday morning to break ground where three new soccer fields will be built. The fields will meet requirements for international play, roughly 75 yards by 120 yards, and will be able to be divided into smaller fields for younger players. Tyrone Soccer’s inaugural season was this past fall and the teams played their games at Shamrock Park. The U-14 girls team was forced to play a complete schedule on the road because there was not an appropriately sized field available. Grading of the fields is expected to take approximately three weeks. Glen Green Grading is handling the project, which is being paid for by impact fees. The fields will be ready for play by the fall of 2006, just in time for possible inclusion in the annual Atlanta Cup tournament. There were 140 children registered to play with Tyrone Soccer this past season and league organizers expect far more than that to play in the next season. Board members are looking into offering a spring season and may hold skills workshops and small sided tournaments if they aren’t able to put on a full season. They expect next fall to be even bigger and better than this past season though with improved facilities and games to be played at Handley Park.
