Developers who get approval from the Peachtree City Council to explore possible annexations with city staff may soon have a firm deadline to wrap up talks.

A proposed ordinance change that would limit that time frame to one year was approved by the Peachtree City Planning Commission Monday night. The change must be approved by the City Council before it can be enforced.

This year the city changed how it handles annexations. Previously, the city used a moratorium that had to be lifted on a case-by-case basis before staff could provide any input.

Now, developers have to get a majority vote of the City Council to approach staff with details on an annexation proposal. After that “step one” vote, the developers can work with city planning staff and later bring the matter up for a final yes-or-no vote from Council.

Even if council votes the first time to explore a particular annexation proposal, that does not guarantee the property owner, developer or agent any vested rights, city staff members have said.

In other business Monday, the commission approved the landscape plan for the San Francisco Bread Company restaurant, which is located on Ga. Highway 54 West next to the Washington Mutual bank.
