Fayetteville elections are just around the corner this fall and qualifying for those interested in running is even closer.

Qualifying for mayor and two of the five at-large council seats runs Aug. 27-29. Long-time Councilman Glenn Brewer will not be seeking re-election.

Qualifying dates are Aug. 27-29 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., said City Clerk Judy Stephens. The qualifying fees are $342 for mayoral candidates and $234 for council seats, Stephens said.

Up for re-election are Mayor Ken Steele and Councilman Wilson Price. Both men have indicated that they will be running.

Steele served on the council from August 1994 until the end of 1999 and has served as mayor since January 2000.

Price is completing his first term after an election victory in November 2003.

Councilman Brewer said he will not seek another term, saying he would retire after serving on the council since 1991. Now at age 79, Brewer cited the rigors of traveling often required of council members as a reason for his decision.

Though he has an attitude that would have him appear decades younger, Brewer said negotiating his wheelchair and other challenges significantly figured into his thinking.

Brewer said he will leave office happy with the accomplishments made by the council since he took office on July 15, 1991. Describing Fayetteville as a pleasant and clean community, Brewer said the council had done a good job controlling growth, keeping density down and keeping the city beautiful.
