Net result is tax increase due to reassessments

Tyrone’s Town Council unanimously approved keeping its current millage rate for the coming budget year at its regular meeting Thursday night.

The millage rate will remain at 2.9 mills, but the end affect will be a property tax increase for owners of parcels which increased in taxable value this year. The town declined to roll back the millage rate to account for the increase in those assessments.

The city’s $6.1 million budget is balanced, and is about 6.5 percent higher than last year. It includes two new police officers, a part-time code enforcement officer, a town engineer, an accountant, along with a maintenance worker, and two positions at the town’s new library.

The budget was unanimously approved at the June 27 council meeting.

The consent agenda, adopted unanimously, includes the appointment of Kathy Winton to the Planning Commission and Kathy Kirby to fill a vacancy at the library.
