Fayetteville City Council will hold public hearings Aug. 2 at 8:30 a.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. on the 2007 millage rate. The council is expected to adopt a 2.99 millage rate which amounts to a net increase in taxes even though the millage rate remains the same as in 2006.

City finance staff recommended that the property tax millage rate for 2007 remain at the current 2.99 mills. The 2.99 mills include 2.24 mills for General Fund operating and .75 mills dedicated for capital projects. The proposed fiscal year 2008 budget used 2.99 mills to calculate the digest tax revenue, said Finance Director Lynn Robinson.

The overall digest increased by 8.19 percent. The reassessment of existing real property increased by 3.46 percent over calendar year 2006, leaving the percentage increase of growth of 4.73 percent. A mill is now valued at $898,071. Total digest taxes are $2,685,233.

The fiscal year 2008 budget estimated an overall increase in the tax digest of 7.5 percent or $2,685,233 to be collected in digest taxes, Robinson said.

Fayetteville’s millage rate was 3.11 mills in 2002 and 3.033 mills in 2003-2005. The rate was lowered last year to 2.99 mills.

Also on Aug. 2 at the 7 p.m. council meeting, council members will hear the second reading of annexation and rezoning requests for two properties on Ga. Highway 54 near Piedmont Fayette Hospital. The Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Facility proposal concerns a 46,000 square-foot facility located on 4.87 acres at 1297 Hwy. 54 West. An annexation and rezoning request by Group VI on a 3.85-acre site at 1231 Hwy. 54 West would locate a 40,000 square-foot, three-story medical office building. The building is expected to serve as tenant space for professional practices wanting to locate near the hospital.
