Residents have one last chance to sound off on the Fayette County Board of Education’s call for a tax increase.

The board is holding its final public hearing on the tax hike tomorrow morning at 8:15 a.m. at the board’s office on Stonewall Avenue. The board is slightly rolling back the maintenance and operation millage rate from 18.6 to 18.596 mills and maintaining the bond millage rate at 3.55 mills.

Since the board is not rolling back the reassessments, the proposed millage rate is a tax hike and three public hearings are required by the state.

The tax digest shows the millage rate will add $5.05 million to the tax coffers, for a 5.9 percent increase.

The last time the board significantly lowered the millage rate was 2003 when it lowered the maintenance and operation rate from 18.053 to 17.65 mills.
