The fallout has started from the Fayette County Commission’s decision not to retain Bill McNally as county attorney.

County Commission Executive Assistant Carol Chandler confirmed this week that former Commission Chairman George Patton has resigned from the county’s Water Committee.

“He submitted a letter to (Chairman) Jack Smith and said in light of the actions of the last few days, he could no longer serve on the committee,” Chandler said.

Patton was one of the citizens-at-large that served on the committee. Chandler said the County Commission would have to pick a successor.

Patton was one of McNally’s defenders at the July 12 meeting that saw the County Commission decide to pursue the option of hiring an in-house attorney.

Chandler said Patton had served on the committee for nearly 20 years.
