Crosspointe pitches in for Square foot MinistryTue, 07/24/2007 - 3:14pm

Crosspointe Community Church in Peachtree City recently sponsored two projects in association with Square Foot Ministry (SFM), the nonprofit organization which has been busy during the summer months improving the living conditions for families in Fayette County. Earlier this month, one team from Crosspointe built walls for the SFM house “builds” in Mississippi coming up in October. Another group of more than 20 people worked on a room addition for a local single father raising a disabled daughter and caring for other family members. With the addition of this room, he will have the space needed for physical therapy equipment his daughter needs. While a group of men from the church worked on the additional room, women from the church helped to clean the inside of the house and paint the interior. Once the framing of the room is complete, SFM will arrange to have qualified contractors install the electrical and plumbing fixtures. More volunteers will work to finish the room. SFM’s summer projects have ranged in size from building wheelchair ramps, to repairing a floor in a mobile home, to adding a room to a house. In addition to local projects, several churches affiliated with this inter-denominational ministry are coordinating the construction of the walls for as many as 10 houses to be transported later this year to Pass Christian, Miss., an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. “Every day, people in Fayette County and elsewhere struggle to provide for their families. When we hear about a need, we go to work,” stated one volunteer when asked why the group does this work. In October, SFM will travel to Pass Christian to raise the walls on more houses for that area. From October 12-14, several groups from Fayette County churches will travel to the area to raise the walls and roof trusses that are being built in Georgia. The next weekend, more groups will go to work on interior projects such as painting. The SFM board of directors will hold a called meeting on Tuesday, July 24, to discuss these trips. More details will be available later this month. Square Foot Ministry depends completely on donations from individuals, churches, and businesses for building supplies and materials. All work except plumbing and electrical is done by volunteers. Tax-exempt financial donations can be mailed to Square Foot Ministry, P.O. Box 371, Fayetteville GA 30214.
