It was a gesture intended to lend a helping hand for those who need it. Representatives of John Wieland’s River Oaks development on Ga. Highway 74 presented Tyrone Police Monday with two bullet-proof vests as a show of support for local law enforcement efforts.

Police Chief David Mullis and Public Information Officer Brandon Perkins had been given a check for $1,350 to go toward the purchase of vests. At $500-600 each, the funds were sufficient to pay for a portion of a third vest, Perkins said.

Wieland Neighborhood Manager Mike Rehm said the company’s contribution came as a way to support Tyrone Police in their ongoing efforts to combat crime. Rehm said the builder had experienced thefts of copper at River Oaks and Southhampton developments.

“The theft of copper is part of an epidemic at construction sites in metro Atlanta,” Rehm said.

Pekins said the donation helps cover the other expenses required to outfit new officers. Some of those include uniforms, firearms, radios and other equipment such as bullet-proof vests.

“This was a worthwhile donation for the safety of officers that also saves the taxpayers money. The vests are custom-fitted for each officer due to the material used in their construction,” Perkins noted, adding that Wieland had made a similar donation several years earlier.
