Campbell County was created in 1828, in part, from Fayette County. The two communities were close then and are close now.

Due to hard times brought about by the Depression, Campbell County went into Fulton County in 1932. Even thought the county was solvent at that time, there was concern that couldn’t last much longer.

Both the Old Campbell County Historical Society and the Fayette County Historical Society were initiated in the early 1970’s, and have always supported each other, including getting together at Christmas.

The members of the Old Campbell County society got together as they do each year for its Christmas luncheon. President Nancy Cornell told about the Christmas activities in the Old Campbell County Courthouse, which serves as its home.

“There was only one pot-bellied stove,” she said, “and it had to serve to heat a very large room. The courthouse served as the center for all community events, whether it was a high school play, functions for the Baptist or Methodist church, a political rally, or the community Christmas party, complete with gifts for all the children.

“There was a community spirit that surrounded everyone. If the Methodist’s needed a new parsonage, both church denominations supported a fundraiser that would be held in this old courthouse.”

Members from far and near attended this year’s get-together, including those from Fayette County.
