Senoia’s leaders Monday night tried their best to downplay the fact that the millage rate was not being lowered for the 2008 budget.

“Your taxes are not going up unless you were reappraised,” said Mayor Robert Belisle.

City administrator Richard Ferry said the extra $17,000 in taxes was necessary for the city.

“The city cannot afford to operate the budget with rolling back the millage rate,” he said.

Ferry recommended keeping the rate at 6.11 mills to help fund the programs for next year.

Still, some residents were not happy about the increase.

“What are we getting for our money? Somewhere, it’s got to stop,’ said resident Kevin Call.

Roger Alley, who lives on Piedmont Drive, said “no one likes to see their taxes raised,” but pointed out the city was getting only 4 percent more in revenue.

There are two more public hearings before the millage rate can be passed. The first is July 27 at 10 a.m. and the second is at 7 p.m. on Aug.6
