Available through Thursday, August 2

Four Coweta County Schools are considered “Needs Improvement” schools under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, and will offer school choice options for the 2007-2008 school year.

East Coweta High School, Arnall Middle School and East Coweta Middle School are non-Title I schools listed as “Needs Improvement” schools. Parents have through August 2 at 5 p.m., to request transfers (awarded on a space-available basis) at those three schools.

Schools on the Needs Improvement list offer transfers on a space-available basis to similar schools which made Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act. Transfers from non-Title I schools are allowed on the basis of capacity in the transfer school, and on the condition that transportation for the transfer student is provided by the parent or guardian.

Evans Middle school is also considered a “Needs Improvement” school. Because it is a Title I school, the rules governing transfers from Evans are different, and will be mailed to parents of Evans students.

Transfers from Arnall Middle School and East Coweta Middle School are available to Lee Middle School, on Willis Road.

Transfers from East Coweta High School are available to Northgate High School School.

Space is limited, and requests for transfers from these three “Needs Improvement” schools should be submitted to Kristy Childers at the Coweta County School System Central Office (167 Werz Industrial Boulevard, Newnan) by 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 2. Call 770-254-2810 for more information.

To request transfer, parents must submit a notarized transfer request form, available at Kristy Childers’ office. The form is available at the 167 Werz Central Office, and can be notarized on-site if parents deliver the form personally. The form is available online at www.cowetaschools.org.

Space is limited for transfers from Arnall Middle School, East Coweta Middle School and East Coweta High School. If more transfers are requested than the schools can grant, priority will be given to students based on academic need, using Criterion Reference Competency Test scores or Georgia High School Graduation Test scores.

Parents of students who request transfers will be notified of their children’s placement by Friday, August 3.

Evans Middle school is also considered a “Needs Improvement” school. Because it is also a Title I school, the rules governing transfers to other middle school sites are different.

Evans Middle School students can transfer to Madras Middle School and Lee Middle School. Forms that allow parents at Evans to request transfers to alternative sites will be mailed to all Evans parents on Monday, July 23.

Evans parents who have questions or need to request another copy of the mailed form can call Kristy Childers or Sherry Warren at 770-254-2810.

Students transferring as a result of school choice will not meet Georgia High School Athletics eligibility requirements, and must participate in a hardship hearing for possible eligibility. High school students transferring to a new school without a corresponding move of their parents are not eligible for varsity competition for one year from the date of entrance, but could play JV during this period.
