Peachtree City residents can now recycle a plethora of electronic items, with a few exceptions, at the city’s recycling center.

A special dumpster is in place to take computers and peripherals in addition to communication devices such as cordless phones, cell phones and pagers. Also accepted are computer towers, laptops and peripherals such as modems, mice, CD drives and others.

Among the few items that can’t be accepted are televisions, microwaves, light bulbs and wooden stereo speakers, said Tom Corbett of the Peachtree CIty Public Works Department.

The company that recycles the electronics either repairs the products or strips them down to recycle the materials, Corbett said. Residents can recycle remote control devices, personal digital assistants, routers, servers and even digital cameras, he added.

Also accepted now are more old-fashioned electronic items such as fax machines, projectors and typewriters, Corbett noted. Stereos, record players, camcorders and VCRs can also be recycled, he added.

The city’s recycling center is open from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays and from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturdays. It is located on Rockaway Road across from the Meade Field recreation complex just off Ga. Highway 74 south.

Other items accepted for recycling at the center include corrugated cardboard, magazines, newspapers, aluminum drink cans and grass clippings. The center also accepts dried leaves and tree trunks from between 3-12 inches in diameter up to four feet long.

Corbett said if the city can get a larger area for the recycling center in the future there may be a way for glass to be recycled. The catch is that the glass bins will have to be monitored well because clear glass has to be separated from colored glass or the bin won’t be accepted by recycling companies, Corbett said.
