Local Civitans unite in service

The Fayette County Civitan Club in Fayetteville and the Line Creek Civitan Club in Peachtree City united their efforts recently to reach out to serve those with learning and early childhood and other developmental disabilities.

One hundred and fifty-three young campers with various degrees of neurological and developmental disabilities along with some 35 counselors descended upon Camp Big Heart in Winder for a week of fun in the great outdoors. On the last night of the camp, 25 Civitans from Fayetteville and Peachtree City shared an evening of service, fun and dancing with the campers. For two hours, the young campers joyfully interacted with friends, counselors and other visitors. The two clubs were able to sponsor a total of 12 campers this year.

This year is especially significant because of the tragic loss of Ryan “Stack” Clark, an eight-year veteran counselor of Camp Big Heart. Clark’s life was tragically ended at Virginia Tech along with 31 fellow students and teachers on April 16, 2007. Clark’s selfless giving to the campers and the camp will long be remembered.

In order to ensure that his vision lives on, a camp scholarship fund in Clark’s memory has been established. For more information write to the Ryan Clark Camp Big Heart Scholarship Fund, 2169 Dogwood Circle, Snellville, Ga. 30078 or visit the website, www.civitaninternational.com.
