Approval avoids need for arbitration or lawsuit

The Peachtree City Council has approved an agreement with Fayette County relating to services both agencies provide.

The document details which agencies provide certain services ranging from law enforcement to recreation. Had an agreement not been reached, the matter would have been sent to mediation and a possible lawsuit.

The most significant change to the new agreement is the creation of a special EMS tax district, which will allow city residents to pay less in property taxes to the county because they already get EMS service from Peachtree City. The city has contended for several years that its residents get double-taxed for EMS service that is chiefly provided by Peachtree City’s fire department.

The new agreement was considered for approval by the Fayette County Commission Thursday night after The Citizen’s deadline.

The new agreement also makes reference to a recent study by the county considering creating its own regional library system and withdrawing from the Flint River Regional Library System. The agreement states that Peachtree City is currently “satisfied with the level of support from Flint River.”’

The agreement, which is required by state law, is due to be submitted to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs by July 1.
