Fayette County parents have until August to make their feelings know about four different calendars for the 2008-2009 school year.

The first proposal starts school Aug. 4, 2008, and features a five-day Thanksgiving break, along with a semester break from Dec. 23-Jan. 2. The last day of school would be May 22, 2009.

The second proposed calendar starts school Aug. 11, offers a three-day Thanksgiving break, and semester break from Dec. 24-Jan. 1. The last day of school is May 22.

The third proposal mirrors the second option, but features five days for Thanksgiving, and adds a day for winter semester break. The last day of school would be May 29.

Finally, the fourth option starts school Aug. 4, offers a three-day Thanksgiving break, and runs the winter semester break from Dec. 22-Jan. 2. The final day of class is May 22.

Residents can register their opinions by filling out a survey at fcboe.org.

Superintendent of Education John DeCotis said a survey would be sent out with students during the first week of school this year. He expects the board to vote on the final calendar at the Aug. 20 meeting.

In other news, the board signed off on its $192 million budget for the next school year. Since the system will not be rolling back the millage rate, the system will be holding three millage rate hearings on July 24 and July 31.
