The hits just keep on coming. A June 13 drug reverse on Ga. Highway 92 led to the arrest of three men from Atlanta, Riverdale and Lumber City on multiple drug and firearms charges when they attempted to purchase 25 pounds of marijuana and one kilogram of cocaine from undercover agents. The men tried unsuccessfully to convince an undercover agent to travel to Union City to complete the transaction.

Arrested were Randy Sims, 31, of Atlanta, James Ponder, 29, of Riverdale, and Rodney Clark, 25, of Lumber City, according to Fayette Sheriff’s Drug Task Force (DTF) Group Supervisor Jody Thomas.

All were charged with criminal attempt to traffic in marijuana, criminal attempt to traffic in cocaine, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a stolen firearm, Thomas said. Sims was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, said Thomas.

The 7 p.m. deal went down as a DTF agent met the men at a convenience store at Hwy. 92 and Rivers Road. The men brought $8,000 in cash, only a portion of the $33,000 needed to make the purchase. Agents made the arrest after the men attempted to convince the undercover agent to leave the location and travel to Union City to complete the deal.

“They showed up with $8,000 and said the rest of the money was at another location. They wanted the agent to follow them to a location in Union City to get the rest of the money for the kilo of cocaine and 25 pounds of marijuana. We made the bust at (Hwy. 92 and Rivers Road) because we didn’t want to jeopardize the agent’s safety,” said Thomas.

Fayette County uniformed deputies and S.W.A.T. members participated in the bust.
