SS Pioneers have two state champions, will send 11 to Region 3 Championships, July 13Tue, 06/19/2007 - 2:57pm

The SouthSide Pioneers competed in the 2007 Georgia Association Junior Olympics State Championship meet this past weekend at Mill Creek High School. The team produced two state champions: Kendra Newsome, Intermediate Girls Discus Throw, and James Mathis, Young Men Javelin Throw. Newsome also placed second in the Intermediate Girls Javelin Throw. Michael DeHaven placed second in the Young Men’s 200M (21.64). Joshua Ferrell placed second in the Youth Boys Pole Vault (2m). These athletes advanced to the Region 3 Championship in Richmond, VA, July 13-15. Other athletes who also advanced to the Region 3 meet are as follows: Youth Boys: • Najee Pace, Triple Jump (4th, Triple Jump: 10.76m) • Joshua Ferrell, Javelin Throw (4th, 31.02m) • Alyssa Rooks, Javelin Throw ( 4th, 18.38m ; Discus Throw 5th, 16.04m ) Intermediate Boys: • Johnathan Ross, (4th 100M:11.3) • Graylin Ward, (4th, High Jump: 1.73m)) These athletes competed in sweltering heat and are to be commended for their performances. Other athletes who competed this weekend were: Brendan Fludd (Young Men’s Long Jump); Hughston Taylor (Young Men’s Long Jump); Samantha Smith (Midget Girls Long Jump); Kayla Smith (Bantam Girls 800M; 400M); Theo Echols (Intermediate Boys 100/200M); Daiyaan Epps (Intermediate Boys 100M/200M) and Chris Pigue (400m) and J. Ross (200m). The Pioneers will head to the AAU State Championships to be held this coming weekend in South Carolina. Meanwhile, the team prepares to depart for the 2007 AAU Club Championships in Orlando, Fla., July 1-5. login to post comments |
