Here we go again. Three men from Atlanta, Riverdale and Lumber City were arrested on multiple drug and firearms charges Wednesday evening in a drug deal on Ga. Highway 92 when they attempted to purchase 25 pounds of marijuana and one kilogram of cocaine from undercover agents. The men tried to convince agents to travel to Union City to complete the transaction.

Arrested were Randy Sims, 31, of Atlanta, James Ponder, 29, of Riverdale and Rodney Clark, 25, of Lumber City, according to Fayette Sheriff’s Drug Task Force (DTF) Group Supervisor Jody Thomas. All were charged with criminal attempt to traffic in marijuana, criminal attempt to traffic in cocaine, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a stolen firearm, Thomas said. Sims was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, said Thomas.

The 7 p.m. deal went down as a DTF agent met the men at a convenience store at Hwy. 92 and Rivers Road. The men brought $8,000 in cash, only a portion of the $33,000 needed to make the purchase.

Agents made the arrest after the men attempted to convince the undercover agent to leave the location and travel to Union City to complete the deal.

“We made the bust at the original location because we didn’t want to jeopardize the agent’s safety,” said DTF Assistant Group Supervisor Jody Thomas.

Fayette County uniformed deputies and SWAT members participated in the bust.
