Fayette County Commissioner Aubrey Glen “A. G.” VanLandingham died Dec. 2, 2005. He had lived in Fayette County for 20 years.

He was first elected in 2000, and ran unopposed for his second term in 2004. A special election will be held to name a replacement.

His death marks the first time in at least a half century that a sitting county commissioner died while in office.

He was a member of the Fayette County Board of Health, and a member of the Atlanta Regional Commission, Regional Leadership Institute.

He had served as a past vice chair of the Association of County Commissioners, the Georgia Health and Human Services Policy Committee. He was also a member of the National Association of Counties Health Steering Committee, and was the current Chairman of the Association of Fayette County Governments, as well as a member of the Two Rivers Resource, Conservation and Development Council.

Said Fayette County Commission Chairman, Greg Dunn, “A. G. was a really decent man, always wanting the best thing for the county. He was honest and always thoughtful of others.

“He studied every issue, listened to people on both sides, put it together and then voted his conscience. Concerned for public safety, A. G. always wanted to make sure the police and firefighters had the best training and equipment,” Dunn added.

Executive Assistant to the Board of Commissioners, Carol Chandler, commented that “he was a good man, and a good human being.”

VanLandingham was a member of the Fayette County Kiwanis Club and the Fayetteville Masonic Lodge #711, F&AM.

Funeral services and burial were Sunday (See Obituaries in this section.).
