Teams face rivals in and out of regionTue, 12/06/2005 - 5:17pm

When Fayette County traveled up the road last year to take on Mundy’s Mill in the regular season, the games were epic. They were both barn burners that came down to the last shot and the large crowds that had amassed to watch the two teams tangle were energized.
Last Friday, Fayette County hosted Mundy’s Mill and, while the games were close and full of their own drama, they weren’t the classics that last years games were. The Lady Tigers of Fayette County fell behind early, trailing by 10 points at the end of the first quarter and the half. They fought hard and smart in the second half though, battling back and losing by four, 47-43. Kristene Walker had 12 points for Fayette County, while Tessa Holt added 10. The boys improved to 6-0 by beating Mundy’s Mill 76-67. Once again, the Tigers got excellent performances from Chris Pettaway, who had 16 points, Marcus Fulks, who added 14 and Channing Welch who scored 11 points and added 11 rebounds. “The guys are really working hard,” said Coach Andre Flynn. “I’m pleased with our progress, but we have a long way to go.” This week won’t be easy for either the boys or the girls as they have two region games; Union Grove last night and Newnan on Friday before a home game against Sandy Creek next Saturday with the girls game starting at 5 p.m. In other games over the weekend, Alexander swept Whitewater with the girls losing 58-40 and the boys falling 83-50. J.T. Martin led the boys in scoring with nine points. “We were in foul trouble just a few minutes into the game and were never able to get into any type of a groove,” said Coach Brent Jackson. “It will be a good test for us to see how we bounce back from a loss.” Whitewater will host Our Lady of Mercy on Friday. Starr’s Mill hosted East Coweta on Friday and split. The Lady Panthers won 51-31 with Kirstin Massmann leading the way with 15 points, while the boys lost 48-41. On Saturday, they took on Sandy Creek and both lost. The Lady Patriots won 45-31 with Morganne Campbell leading the team in scoring with 15 points, while Lindsay Paschal added nine points. Ashley Zilles led Starr’s Mill with nine points and Emily Woodward added eight points. The boys had a much closer game with Sandy Creek winning 60-56. Starr’s Mill’s Mark Harris led all scorers with 21 points, while teammate Spencer Shelto chipped in 12. Sandy Creek was led by Chris Houston’s 12 points, while Cameron Brooks and Terrance Roberts each added nine. Sandy Creek played at Douglas County last night and will travel to Chapel Hill on Friday and Fayette County on Saturday. Starr’s Mill took on Mundy’s Mill last night and will host McIntosh on Saturday. McIntosh took on Our Lady of Mercy last Friday and both the boys and girls picked up wins. The Lady Chiefs won 57-22, while the boys team won 41-37. McIntosh will travel to Lithia Springs for games on Friday night. login to post comments |
